Carolyn’s Story

Have you ever stopped and wondered why you have crossed paths with someone in your life?  I would like to tell you about a sweet lady named Carolyn with whom my path has crossed.   Carolyn,  a client of “Your Neighborhood Connection” has been using YNC services for the past 8 months.  I have spoken with Carolyn on the phone numerous times, however, never had the opportunity to officially meet her in person.   Each time Carolyn calls the office myself or staff is greeted with a delightful sweet voice saying “Do you know who this is”?  Without a beat myself or staff give the same reply “Is this Carolyn”?  On the other end you hear a giggle followed by “How did you know”?   Carolyn would finish her phone call telling me “I would really like to meet you one day”.  Carolyn also expressed the desire to meet YNC’s Administrative Assistant Carrie.

On October 2nd, 2018 arrangements were made to finally meet.  I am not sure who was more excited myself or Carolyn.   As Carrie and I approached the front door we were greeted by a pint size spry little lady bearing a grin ear to ear.   Carrie handed Carolyn a bouquet of flowers she had picked from her garden.   Carolyn uttered having the perfect spot for them.  As we followed her to the kitchen, she points to her beautifully prepared kitchen table. We noticed that the table was arranged with three place settings and ready for a tea party.  Before our tea party she insisted on giving us the grand tour of her home.  Everything was immaculate with every item in its place.   During our tour she reminisced about fond memories of her home. Periodically Carolyn would have difficulty finding the appropriate words to express herself, in spite of this, the sparkle in her eye continued to tell the story.   After the tour, Carolyn invited us to join her for tea and shared her  love of entertaining guests.  Her happiness shined through during our conversation and fellowship.   We sat together relishing our hot tea, pumpkin custard, cookies and grapes.  Carolyn explained her YNC care companion helped her organize the tea party the day before.

Sitting around her kitchen table we were engaged in conversation  and  laughter as we listened to her stories.   Carolyn, a retired music teacher shared pictures of school musicals she helped orchestrate.   The musical she seemed most proud of was the “Wizard of OZ”.   As our time was nearing, Carolyn graced us with her magical gift of piano playing.

My job as the Executive Director is to ensure our team is making a difference in the lives of those we are privileged to serve.  I can say without a doubt, we are!  I will also share that our clients make a difference in our lives.  Carolyn,  I look forward to our next get together.   I believe you wanted to do facials and apply Mary Kay make up.  I will be sure to keep everyone up to date on Carolyn’s next adventure!
